Many people, choosing between 17-35 and 16-35, lean towards the second precisely because of its sharpness. The lens holds backlight well - this is a feature of almost all Nikon's top series lenses. The most versatile 16-35 will be on a full-frame camera, the range of focal lengths covers the entire classic wide-angle range. More wide-angle lenses already give more distortion, at 16-35 it is quite tolerable. In summary, a great all-around wide-angle lens for full-frame cameras, sharp and beautifully patterned.
