I have an old cast iron double sink which means glassware is in constant danger unless I use mats on the floor. I've used rubber mats, but food and liquids always got stuck in the channels underneath and decomposed. Worse, my sink is white so I actually had to put bleach in to deal with the horrible stains that formed - cleaning with detergent won't remove them. So I was wondering if there is a way to avoid this problem - if there are sink mats that don't lie directly on the sink. I found them and so far they have been great. They have four feet with silicone pads that hold the metal grate above the sink surface. Food and liquids don't get stuck and the only major stains are small ones right on the feet. The grate keeps dishes and metal pans off the bottom of the sink to avoid damaging the sink. The metal mesh itself can crack over time, but rubs off easily. I have a version without a center hole to create a nice flat base in the sink - things no longer slide down the drain and tip on me. The downside is that they aren't great for flushing the sink. Dishes. Cutlery and other sharp objects get stuck in the grid, and small objects can slip underneath (in this case you have to lift the grid to catch them). So I keep them in the sink for everyday use, but replace the rubber mat again when I actually do the dishes in the sink, and wash these grids along with everything else.
