Scraping noise inside hub

I've had the 1500W kit for maybe 9 months. I just scoot around on the bike in the park. It is a lot of fun. With a 52V battery pack I've gotten it up to 38 mph at its fastest (which is too fast on a bike). I probably only have a few hundred miles total on it. The hub started making a light rotational scraping noise that I thought was the rear disc brake at first. I'll have to take the hub apart and see if the magnets have moved around a bit. It still works good but sounds like it will get worse if I don't do something. I am assuming this is just typical poor quality workmanship that you sometimes get with low priced products. There are videos on YT of people taking them apart and diagnosing different issues. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out. It could also be a wheel bearing. The light scraping gets worse when I am leaned over, more on one side than the other. The twist throttle has started to act a little funny too in the restricted mode. Sometimes with very light throttle it will stop giving power from a standstill. In unrestricted mode it still works the same as it always did but power delivery is smoother in 750W mode so I tend to keep it there unless I am on the road and want to go fast.Oh well. This was my first ebike and I will probably make another one with more expensive components. For the cost this has been good and a fun project. This is still a good kit. There are more expensive hub motors and the mid drive motors are alot more expensive, so I am not too surprised. I should be able to figure out the noise I think. I am hard on the bike and motor and bounce it around a lot. I have gotten 2 rear pinch flats from going over bumps too hard. The first time I bent the rim a little bit and straightened it with anadjustable wrench. So you mileage may vary. I'd recommend the 1000W kit over the 1500 just because the power difference doesn't feel that much going from 750 to 1500 and 1500 requires 40A Battery BMS whereas the 1000W parts are kind of standard and cheaper. The main benefit of unrestricted mode isn't the extra power it is not have a speed limiter.

Pros
  • 48V 1500W Powerful brushless gearless motor with 34mph (55km/h) speed; Restricted to 750W and 24mph (38km/h) speed by default as a road-legal pedal bike conversion kit.
Cons
  • The throttle control can be unpredictable, making it hard to maintain a consistent speed
