Two people are the easiest and safest way to do this. Have a helper hold the door to relieve the shock absorber. Use pliers or a standard screwdriver to remove the retaining clips on both ends. Don't worry about damage, the new one comes with new clips. Have a helper gently raise or lower the door to find a neutral point where the shock absorber will not support the weight and prevent the door from opening too far. Pull directly from where the ball joint attaches to the car, you may need to pry open with a screwdriver. Put the new one on, attach it and you're done. A few things to remember about all hits. The cylinder (thick part) is mounted on the side you want to lift. For my suburb this is done. Also, try to fully extend it as often as possible to avoid uneven wear.
