Two people are the easiest and safest way to do this. Have a helper hold the door to relieve the shock absorber. Use pliers or a standard screwdriver to remove the retaining clips on both ends. Don't worry about damage, the new one comes with new clips. Have a helper gently raise or lower the door to find a neutral point where the shock absorber will not support the weight and prevent the door from opening too far.
