This is a review of two different products that we have used together. When we moved in we put new carpet in our house and decided to keep all 4 girls on the 1st floor and out of the closets. and play under the beds. This isn't our forever home and we needed something to work with without damaging the railing. And you don't have to fiddle with those kids' gates that require three hands to operate. I have used Safety Innovation No Hole to attach the child to stairs and retractable baby gates for stairs. YES, I bought TWO mounting kits because I have TWO railings. I've changed the way I use the mounting kit - it comes with small pieces of wood to hold the screws that hold the sliding gate in place. I didn't use a long piece of wood. This is designed to work with railings, not spindles. Depending on the shape of your railing, connectors are available for either a round or square installation. It's made of plastic and isn't designed for "resize" or shaping. I wasn't able to install a retractable gate inside the stairwell for a cleaner look - the placement of the railing made this a problem. Installing it outside is fine - it works just as well. Screw fastening severe wear. Just make sure you place the pre-drilled new spot so that it will NOT interfere with the gate - it will slide over the mechanism which screws into the mounting hardware without screws. I also had to pre-drill new holes for the gate's "hook" attachment in the boltless mounting kit. I hope this doesn't sound confusing - it's easier than it sounds. Retractable gates are great. Grab the handle and wiggle it slightly to unhook it. It's simple and straightforward - if you get your hands full climbing stairs it's easy to use (I have CNS issues so the left side of my body doesn't function properly and I love it!). The retractable gate is the same color as the new carpet and is see-through - most guests don't notice. Fasteners without screws are white and match the pins. If you have small dogs or puppies, this setup won't work without some practice. Our girls listen most of the time, but the "red" time they see outweighs their ability to memorize the rules. It helps!
