Needing to replace a homemade network file server based on an old laptop, I looked at the cheaper WD NAS units and after reading the 1 and 2 star reviews, saw I look at the more expensive devices. Even the 1@2 star rating for this PR2100 almost made me buy elsewhere. However, I threw caution aside and bought one and after 3 weeks of use it has exceeded my expectations in every way. Installation was easy; Installation was easy; it was easy to use and fast, quiet and reliable. A new firmware update was recently released (to keep it up to date) and installed with no problems. Now I not only have a RAID 1 network file system and a fully automated backup system for our PCs (recovery of functions lost on the old device as Windows/Software evolved in versions 7 to 10) but also our smartphone files are automatically backed up and our smartphones have full access to files on the NAS at home or on the go (with sufficient network coverage). In addition, thanks to DLNA, our images and videos can be easily displayed anywhere in the house. All historical files (not essential for mobile devices) have been moved from my main laptop to the NAS, freeing up valuable storage space, but with secure Wi-Fi access they are still accessible remotely if needed. Finally I now have a Linux box at home, which reminds me of the days when I used engineering desktops for work, which made some aspects of system administration easier for me. I think that's an advantage over most. It should also be said that the best knowledge of how to use WD My Cloud devices can be obtained by using YouTube videos. Most of them were made in 2014-2016 and changes were made to the software, but the basic information provided is still relevant at the time of writing this 2020 review.
