My 10 year old Vitamix had trouble maintaining the speed selected, so I was able to determine that it was due to potentiometer fatigue. The part is sealed so well that any attempt to open it for cleaning would likely destroy it. The exchange of parts was announced. A quick call to Vitamix confirmed that the warranty was expired and that the minimum repair fee was twice the cost of the part. The part is fairly easy to replace and appears to be of good quality. While not exactly the same, it is indexed correctly and fits well. If you're familiar with opening your car, by all means give this repair a try. Only time will tell if it can keep up with the original part in terms of durability.
