This is basically a red base, with cards and letters. You choose a card and can place it behind a blocker to hide the word or in front. Then there are spaces on the base for the letter tiles to be placed. Generally, you will start with the word easy to see. Your kid will then copy the letters to make a matching word for the card on the base. After they are good at that, you can start hiding the word and see if they can build something close to the word.I also used this just as sight-words. I would show them the picture with the word hidden and see if they could tell me the word. Next, we sounded out the word while it was visible. After that, we started using the letters for the beginning sounds. Finally, we used the letters to match the word and use all the sounds of the letters while making the words. I feel like this helped because so far 2 out of 2 kids in school were reading before they hit kindergarten. My youngest is almost 4, not old enough for kindergarten yet, but is already sounding out words and combining letters to make the sounds he wants to make. He is not reading, but so close.None of the above is in any way me trying to brag. Only one of three kids talked when they were supposed to. The other two didn't say a single word until after 2 years old. This toy is just a tool that may help your kid learn. It helped mine to learn how to communicate better. There are no rules with this toy, just use your gut and let your kids help you figure out the best way to work with them. Remember, this is supposed to be fun, not a chore. I used plenty of breaks and they could stop whenever they wanted. Stickers make great motivators as well. I hope this helps you as much as it has helped us.
