
I have a pair of RocketFish eSATA/USB 2.0 combo drive enclosures (Best Buy's own brand). They were very versatile, but I don't have many computers with eSATA ports anymore. This means I had to use a much slower USB 2.0 connection to use these cases. Enter these StarTech eSATA to USB 3.0 cables. Speed restored! I was able to access drives in enclosures at eSATA speeds far faster than USB 2.0. No problems or bugs. Originally posted a 5 star review, I have downgraded it to 3 stars. I bought a third cable to buy a 4TB hard drive that fits into one of two eSATA/USB 2.0 external enclosures. This cable will not work with any of them. I also tried changing the HDD to a 1TB HDD. One case, the silver McAlly case, doesn't recognize the drive at all. I've tried this on three different MacBooks (2020 13" Pro with M1 processor, Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro and 2019 16" MacBook Pro) and two different Windows laptops (Dell and HP). I have one newer SABRENT case that also supports both eSATA and USB 2.0 On all five computers above, the computer initially recognizes the drive, but as soon as I try to access the drive - partition, format, write files, etc., the drive disappears and becomes accessible without disconnecting the cable, turning the case on and off, etc. Suspecting that the cable might be defective, I replaced one of my two original cables with the McAlly and SABRENT cases, but the result was the same. This cable just doesn't work with them My old ThermalTake IcyDock works fine however I don't know why McAlly and SABRENT cases don't work with this cable Both cases claim Tried to support SATA I/II and this cable supports SATA I/II/III but I couldn't get it to work. I ended up buying a Revain Basics 3.5" USB 3.0 Enclosure for a 4TB drive.
