Review on LG 27UN850 W: Borderless DisplayHDR Monitor with Adjustable Stand, USB Hub, and High Dynamic Range by Patrick Duck

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Some important functions are missing

This review is for the LG 27UN850, which I've been using as a USB monitor with an MSI Prestige 15 laptop for a few months. One star down has nothing to do with image quality, which is great for my non-photographic use. I knew about the disadvantages of the monitor and I bought it anyway because it is good value for money. Cons of my use: 1) No hard ethernet connection on the monitor. It's fine if you have Primo Ethernet in your area and good Wi-Fi coverage. I don't and I need a hardwired connection. This forces you to burn a USB-C port to use as an Ethernet connection or as a full-fledged USB-C hub. 2) Only 50W charging power. The MSI Prestige has an 82Wh battery and especially while gaming it can die unless a dedicated USB-C charger is used. So I need 3 USB-C ports on the laptop to meet my needs fully cover, but like most laptops I only have two. 3) I discovered laptop battery profile issues when using USB-C and used the solution found on YouTube. external devices like this monitor. It drove me nuts for a while, a constant disconnect signal and then an instant reconnect signal. The problem is not with the monitors, but with connecting the USB-C mode. I haven't tried using USB C to show the port connection to this monitor and I don't know if this mode will solve some problems. Windows 10 disadvantage when using the monitor as a second monitor. There is no way to use laptop screen as monitor 1 and LG as monitor 2 by using them independently. You can either mirror or use 1 alone or 2 alone. As a big plus, I like the joystick to control all monitor functions. It took a few days to get used to, but now button row monitors feel dated and unwieldy.
