this works best with books. I purchased to hold files as well and it's not ideal. I needed a bookend for the bookends just to keep it from expanding. The dividers are shorter than the ends and can cause damage to books when putting them back. I do think it has a place/use just not for what I purchased it for. Overall the product is good, not steel sturdy but enough to hold books.
