Review on πŸ“Ί ANTOP HDTV and FM Amplified Antenna with Smart Boost System - 85 Mile Range - Dual Outputs - Supports TV, FM Stereo, and OTA-Ready Streaming Devices by Bob Roberts

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A good inexpensive compact antenna with good gain, but not essential for everyday continuous use.

The antenna I received was marked as a Nagoya antenna and arrived in nice yellow zipped packaging including a very sincere Nagoya holographic label but the seller doesn't promise it will is an "official Nagoya antenna". product, so mileage may vary. Packaging does not indicate where antenna was made, but build quality is quite good. show the same tiny gap of 0, 2mm to 0.5mm on the bottom when mounted on the UV-5R which I've seen others describe their Nagoya antennas You can easily fix this with a small washer or o-ring, but these did not come with the antenna I received but at the lower price I paid I still rate the antenna a solid 4 out of 5 for value. It fits my UV-82 and UV-3r+ seamlessly (note that it won't work on older UV-3 models as they don't use the SMA--F antenna like the newer Baofeng radios). Very significant gain compared to the short 5" standard UV-5r and UV-3r+ antennas, but not as impressive compared to the best Baofeng 7" UV-82 and BF-F8HP antennas. This is because the newer 7 inch Baofeng antennas that come with these models are actually pretty good and leave less room for improvement. Essentially this antenna is attempting to provide performance close to quarter wave vertical response at 2 meters and 5/8 wave response at 70cm, which should offer significant gain over your typical canard style compact antenna, but the crux of the matter is it it is not easy to get the full theoretical gain advantage as these antenna types are very dependent on having a good ground plane to work with. So when hand-held, your hand and body interact quite a bit, and the actual gain and radiation pattern from the antenna depends on how you hold the antenna. I've found that I can definitely get stronger signals on both receive and transmit, but this isn't one of those upgrades that will automatically improve under all circumstances. For example, this is NOT a suitable antenna for use in a car. When extended, this antenna is too long and fragile for continued use, and you cannot use a partially extended antenna if you expect only slightly lower gain - if you use the antenna less than 100% in the fully extended position, the antenna is completely detuned. This results in very high reflected power which can damage your radio. For me, the best thing about this antenna is that it is very compact when folded, so I can put it in the side pocket of my handy carrying case and always have it on hand. in case I need some extra gain for a distant repeater or simplex connection.

Pros
  • Quality Construction
Cons
  • Requires Socket
