1 1/2? (or close to) a gallon tank and this works well for cleaning it without having to empty everything to clean it. I love that it starts automatically, you just have to dip the vacuum part and wiggle it up and down a few times for it to work. The only thing I don't like about it is that for the size/height of the tank I'm using I have to pour extra water into the tank to finish cleaning it because the water level is too low. remove everything quickly. This is not a product defect, it is due to the size of the tank. However, the flow is slow enough that I'm not worried about draining the tank too quickly.
