Review on DB Electrical 410-40034 Starter: Perfect Fit for BMW R60 & Moto Guzzi Models by Jacob Ferrarini

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent OEM specification replacement for my Moto Guzzi Breva 750

The replacement is very simple: 1. Remove the screws from the plate that holds the footpegs (blue, this is necessary so that you have enough room to remove the starter) 2. Remove the electrical connectors (the top red arrow indicates the hot wire is held in place by a 13mm nut (it appears it is), the bottom connector snaps just off)3. Remove the two bolts securing the starter to the gearbox (yellow)4. Remove the starter (you may have to use a wrench or crowbar, I peeked next to the green arrow). That's all. And to install, simply reverse the steps (tighten the starter bolts to 22 ft/lb or just "tight plus 1/4 turn"). I was having trouble with my 2004 Moto Guzzi Breva 750. The starter clicked and barely turned. and seems to get bogged down and stuck. It smelled like a battery problem - the bike would sometimes start fine after a long ride, but other times, especially after you sat down, the starter would barely crank a turn or two before draining the battery *very* quickly. Finally, one day after trying to start my bike, the starter nearly caught fire, melting some wires and emitting "oooh" smoke. In short, this has been a launch issue the whole time. I disassembled the starter and found metal filings inside the starter and signs of a slow onset of catastrophic failure. I picked up this DB Elektroblock after stumbling upon it on the company's website. It appears to be made exactly to OEM specs and sounds a lot better/more powerful than the Valeo starter that came with the bike. Undoubtedly great value for money and a very easy way to save money yourself. **Note that MANY Guzzis also have problems with the starter relay - check that out too.
