Read this to understand how to use it.

This is a big deal when you have what looks like a short and you need to diagnose it. In my case I have a bunch of solar panels and some panels are failing. I will use this to find bad panels. You will need this instead of a regular voltmeter as it will generate the 250-1000 volts needed for troubleshooting instead of the 9 volts of a regular voltmeter. Some errors only appear at this high voltage. You can even see sparks when you plug in the meter. Management is terrible. I found a good video on Youtube but here is the short version. To test the insulation, connect the probes to the two external terminals - L and E. Select the voltage 250 500 1000. Press the button to test. You can rotate it to fix it, but you risk getting zapped. Some errors only show up when the unit is exposed to water, as is the case with my solar panels. You must connect a pin to either plus or minus. The other wire should go to the body or ground of the item under test. The error can be either positive or negative, so check both. An interesting note about solar panels is that since the solar panel acts like a battery, you must short the positive and negative leads together. The meter works by providing voltage and checking current, so the presence of voltage and current interferes. By connecting the cables together (you need to connect them to a switch so you don't damage the connectors) you can then test both cables together with the panel case. The two internal pins test AC voltage, but only when you press the 750VAC button next to the connector. DC voltage test buttons. I checked the voltages with another meter and they are pretty accurate.
