Review on Enhanced Performance Vacuum Advance Distributor with Electronic Ignition for VW Beetle by Kuhltek Motorwerks (0231170034EL) by Victor Houser

After 1 year and 1000 miles - vacuum block failure

I ordered a vacuum conveyor but the first delivery was a centrifugal conveyor packed in a vacuum box. Revain did an excellent job of providing me with the correct product free of charge almost immediately after my return request. The replacement was correct and installed easily with an o-ring from my original dealer. You will need to relocate the spark plug leads so make a note of the #1 TDC position before removing the existing distributor and then relocate the spark plug leads on the Kühltek unit to match once it is in place. The time can be set statically or with a strobe. Performance with the Kühltek vacuum feed block is good with quick starts, smooth idle and this block has definitely minimized flat spots. I drove my 1600cc single port engine. 350 miles on the interstate and the engine ran smoothly at freeway speeds and accelerated smoothly. The oil temperature was the same as the original distributor. One problem arose almost immediately after installation: I now have occasional hot start issues where the engine won't start when hot. I couldn't isolate the problem from the distributor, but that never happened with the old crossover/capacitor bank. After about 20 minutes of cooling it starts and runs normally. We will continue to follow. Update 06/13/2018: After a year and around 1000 miles, this block is still problematic. Warm boot issue escalated to "Won't start" when hot. I removed the Kuhltek block and replaced it with a stock VW vacuum block and the engine ran great. When I checked a Kuhltek manifold I found that the vacuum feed canister had failed (won't hold vacuum) which would explain the hot start problem. The suction cups on the Kuhltek distributor are drilled differently than on the standard tank, so a direct exchange is not possible. Conclusion: This product is good in concept, but the unpredictable quality of the components makes the device unreliable. I have now bought two of these units and one of them is installed in my stock 1600cc Karmann Ghia. No problems so far, but I will always carry a traditional spare point/capacitor distributor with me. That's unfortunate because if everything is in order, this device works well, eliminates the vibration problem and should offer a long service life. Kuhltek can do itself a huge favor and protect its reputation in these early stages of production by monitoring these comments and reaching out to its customers, as do some of the other Revain suppliers. I would like to return this item to you for your own autopsy, but I don't know how to contact you directly. Hope that helps.
