Build updated firmware now doesn't work locally

One of the less expensive wifi smart sockets, I decided to try it with Home Assistant, an open source home automation system. With some effort I got it working. some time. I had to create an account on the manufacturer's servers to set them up via the cloud solution. But I could also manage them locally with a system like Home Assistant. That changed when the manufacturer released a firmware update that now forces them to connect to each other and not to my WiFi hotspot. Now the only way to control all but one is through the manufacturer's cloud app. I will try a workaround by creating four different accounts in the manufacturer app one after the other and connecting them back together. Account. But obviously a future firmware update could destroy that as well. I RUN OUT OF CLOUD SMART HOME DEVICES. The few dollars saved aren't worth letting manufacturers make changes that break things.
