I have a 65 lb Pitbull/Lab mix. I took the largest size for him because I used a tape measure and the measurements showed that he would be shorter than his neck, chest and length. The edges of the down are definitely not sewn and can easily tear or get caught. If I went a size down it would be too tight so I would recommend a slightly looser fit as your dog doesn't want to be restricted when walking or lying down when stretched out. The inside is soft and warm and the hood doesn't hold up, but if you tuck it behind your neck it stays.
