Review on Enhanced Under Sink Filtration Membrane by Applied Membranes by Stetson Olsen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Bottled water replacement

I purchased this filtration system based on reviews here on Revain and other online sites. I originally went for a 6-step system that included UV sanitizer. After careful consideration and budget decision I changed my mind and settled on this 5 tier unit. When the unit arrived it was packed in a huge box that was just an outer protection for a smaller box that contained all the parts almost ready for assembly. I have to say the instructions were clear, could have been worded a bit better but the gist is clear. I turned off the main water valve and found it was leaking, adding a bit to the cost of the project. The hardware store told me I could replace the screw in the valve with a more durable 90 degree ball check valve, so I agreed. I also bought some extra hose and compression fittings as I also wanted to run the plumbing to the fridge's ice maker. About an hour after I installed the main water dispenser and secured all the connections with teflon tape to avoid any potential leaks, I finished the job by attaching the so-called sewer line to the drain pipe under the sink. I wasn't sure why it was there, but I did it anyway. The final step was to connect the color coded hose to the filter assembly and then turn on the water. I was glad I took my time installing it as there were no leaks from any connections. After the water filled the system, I noticed a sound like water running down the drain. It turned out that the sewer line cleaned the system and drained the sewage. When first installed, this waste water appears to run for about an hour, but once the storage tank is full, the same water pressure closes the valve and the system is ready to go. I did notice a slight increase in my water bill but when I saw the difference in ice from the ice machine and sampled the water which could give Dasani a run for its money I have to say it was well worth it. The ice from the dispenser used to be cloudy and at times smelled slightly of chlorine, and the taste of the water was just as unpleasant. The ice comes out today like clear glass, odorless and cloudy, and the water is the best I've ever tasted. Even my soups and coffees tasted much better thanks to the improved water, which the guests noticed very much. The only downside to this is that I lost most of the base cabinet space, but if you plan ahead how you want to position the system before you do that, it will make a world of difference. Finally, allow yourself plenty of time and no distractions for a smooth install.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors
