The amateur runner is here. I'm primarily a road runner and have only run in Merrell Bare Access (1,2,3,4) so far and since they've moved to flexibility and had all the durability issues I decided to find a new pair to go around to replace them. . I tried Alta Escalante 1.5.way to give a lot felt like walking on foam. Lems Primal 2 - great fit but not enough padding to walk on the pavement, and bad to breathe too. Then enter Topo St-3. This shoe was a great compromise between the two. This shoe has just enough stack height to absorb some impact when running on the pavement, but not too much to make it difficult for you to know what you're walking on (you still feel those big rocks when you land on them ). There is enough space in the toe area to spread my toes and feel a natural relaxation when wearing them. The only complaint I have is that the neck is too high for my liking, in fact it rubs my back a bit if I'm not careful. My workaround is some tape along the Achilles tendon, longer socks, and loop lacing. That complaint aside, I love these shoes. I hope that in a future design they lower the back of the shoe 1 or 2 cm and it will be almost perfect for me. Shoes can't make it, at least not to the point where they really aren't worth it. And they delayed the good news. I posted some pics of the tread wear I had. There is obvious wear and tear when I step on the front foot but hopefully they should last at least another 1-2 hundred miles before I throw them away, not the best but they are comfortable and allowed me to put some distance due to the slight extra stack height gain / sole cushion from what i was using. I usually run 13-16 miles in it and have no hotspots, no issues.
