The blade is coated with some type of resin/plastic to protect it from rusting. However, chipped coatings easily lead to rust spots. Also, the handle is hollow and holds water, which is a bit annoying as rust will drip off the next day when you use it.

In the photo, the handle looks like cheap plastic, but it's actually an extremely durable and resilient polymer material. If you are looking for a durable 6 inch band knife look no further.
