Most of the time they work out of the box and I suggest if you're not a pro and can't assemble your own cables you buy good quality ready made analog video cables, analog audio cables and a professional grade SDI cable for your actual encoder. I have used this converter to transfer all my videotapes from my VCRs with S-VIDEO outputs (using the S-Video Y adapter cable).
