decent sand for the money

The sand came out mostly dry which struck me as odd. I checked the bag at the local fish store and there was liquid in it. I suspect he lost it on delivery but was a little disappointed that I might have lost some of the life that should have been in the sand. what i paid for except that it fogged up the tank for about 2 days. That's what I expected without washing it. Next time I might buy in store.

Pros
  • Great for a small house
Cons
  • There are flaws

Love this sand you can't beat the price

I have bought many sandbags for my many African cichlid tanks and have never been disappointed with this brand. It's the perfect weight that doesn't blow easily but is soft and all my Africans love to sift and dig in. I personally wash it several times in a 5g bucket of water until the water runs clear and then put it in the tank. The maximum time required to clear cloud cover (if any) is a few hours. I suspect others who have had problems have either not flushed this stage or its filtration is

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • Definitely a bad product

Not quite alive, but still a trigger substrate.

Not a bad deal for the amount of substrate you get, but I seriously doubt it's as "alive" as they claim. My bag was pretty dry. There was practically no more moisture in the sand, and nitrifying bacteria did not get into my aquarium. My initial cycle actually takes longer than usual which wouldn't be a problem if I was using dry sand, but considering it's supposed to be live I don't think it's anywhere near as efficient as I was hoping. Dry or alive, it really didn't make much of a differenceโ€ฆ

Foggy water forever.

I read many other reviews before buying this one and thought I'd give it a try for the price it's sold for. First, (2) of the (3) bags I ordered are almost dry, so I doubt the living substrate is of much use. The most negative effect, however, was how long he had fogged the tank. It took me forever to look a little better. Each bag of substrate comes with a small bag of clarifying agent to add to the water. Two of the three clarifying packets had the consistency of water when opened, one theโ€ฆ

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Vulgarity

Received my order for 160lb Living Sand and paid for overnight UPS shipping. Arrival took 11 days. All the sand was dry and there is no chance of life left in it. Two days after pouring sand into a previously driven 210 gram tank, my ammonia spiked due to the sand decomposing. If you are using this with an existing tank, NOT. Buy from another source or locally as it will not be available. Most live sands don't need rinsing and that suggests they aren't but that must be due to decomposition andโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Satisfied so far
Cons
  • Some difficulties

Okay, full disclosure. One bag wasn't enough for my 75 gallon reef. This is probably the best value for money Revain calcium carbonate based aquarium sand from a reliable manufacturer. At least that's when I bought it. Whether they are excellent reef or African sea cichlids, they require water with high carbonate hardness and high pH. Oh, and aquarium maintenance has more to do with maintaining the water chemistry for the needs of its inhabitants, so don't complain if you just can't keep theโ€ฆ
