Description of Cowlboy Crankshaft Positioning Tool Ford

This tool is specifically designed to align the crankshaft at Top Dead Center (TDC) fit for Ford 1993–newer 4.2L and 4.6L 2-valve engines, 1993–newer 4.6L 4-valve engines, and 1993–newer 5.4L and 6.8L V8 engines. These engines are not Free Wheeling engines meaning that if the crankshaft is rotated during timing chain installation (Jumped Timing), it can cause significant damage to the Pistons and Valves if the cylinder heads are not removed. This tool slides easily over the crankshaft and locks into place with the Woodruff key. When the crankshaft is rotated so that the slot in the handle locks into the engine cover alignment dowel pin, the engine is at TDC. Fabricated from structural steel and black oxide coated for a long lasting finish. Must have tool for timing chain installation and adjustment!.

Tool needed modification for 5.4L 2V Expedition 1998-2002.

This was for the timing chain and guides on my 1999 5.4L 2V Expedition. This check should be applied to 1998-2002 2V 5.4L engines when replacing the chain/guides. You will immediately notice that the tool's handle is too long and is blocked by the air conditioning compressor, causing the tool to not fit properly. You can either do what I did, which is shave 1/4 inch of the metal off the handle to clean the AC compressor. I believe another option would be to remove the air conditioning…

Pros
  • Timing Belt Tools
Cons
  • Good but not great
