Description of DANIEL SMITH Extra Watercolor Goethite Brown

DANIEL SMITH is the Innovative Manufacturer of Beautiful Watercolors for Artists Worldwide, and makes the largest range of watercolors of any manufacturer, more than 240 colors. The 240+ color collection includes the exciting PrimaTek watercolors made from minerals (like Amethyst) plus other unique colors (like Moonglow) not available elsewhere, and Luminescent Watercolors which allow artists to capture the luminescent colors that exist in nature that regular watercolors cannot capture!. Found in iron deposits nearly worldwide, Goethite (Brown Ochre) is named after Johann Wolfgang Goethe, the German philosopher, poet and mineralogist. Our unusually pure pigment is mined in Russia, south of Moscow. Rich and warm, DANIEL SMITH Goethite is a dark tea color in masstone and washes out to a rich, warm tan. In washes, it displays intriguing granulation, with pools of light and dark in every brushstroke. Like all colors derived from the earth, it is lightfast and permanent - a lasting connection to the planet and the creative forces of nature. Excellent Lightfastness, Semi-transparent, Granulating, Low staining. PY 43. Conforms to ASTM D4236.

Versatile and rich "terracotta " brown

I was pleasantly surprised by the range of hues this brown produced. After I put it to the test, I found that it could be diluted for sheer washes or layered for deep, complex shades. It was particularly useful for landscape painting where I wanted to capture the warmth of the earth..

Pros
  • Versatile, range of hues, great for landscapes.
Cons
  • None, it exceeded my expectations.

Neutral brown. Unique color not found in many places

Goethite - granular neutral brown. A more neutral, less orange version of Daniel Smith's raw sienna. A nice neutral brown.

Pros
  • Excellent lightfastness, translucent, granular, low staining
Cons
  • Optional
