Bought it to fix my axe.

It's solid and heavy. I have a Fiskars x27 splitting axe that needed to be sharpened and honed. I needed a good file to remove the jagged bits from the axe. It worked great. Once the jagged edges are removed / straighten I went to my honing stone and got a razor edge on my axe.05/27/2016 - Update - A few years later the Forney file is still working like a champ. It still files like new and has no signs of failing anytime soon.

Pros
  • Standard American pattern
Cons
  • The file is relatively expensive compared to other similar options available in the market

Great file. I actually used this to flat file an older pair of snow skis and it worked well. I also have used it for setting the base bevel angle as well.It cuts very well and seems to be well made.It has also been used on a few other small projects around the house.I will probably purchase another one.I hope this review was helpful.

Pros
  • Good quality file, it came properly oiled up and ready to use. It was worth what I paid for it.
Cons
  • The file's grip can become extremely slippery when used for a prolonged period of time, causing potential safety hazards

Maybe a paperweight?

Should have done more research before I bought this file. Brand new, out of the box I went to work on an ax blade. The file simply rode over the steel blade. Could not get a good, clean bite on the blade. Then I noticed it was made in China.China, what the heck was I thinking. Like I said, I should have done more research. This one goes in the re-cycle bin and I'll be looking for another. This time I'll be more careful. What a waste of time, money and energy.

Pros
  • File is a good file but would like for it to be a little ore course.
Cons
  • The file wears down quickly, making it ineffective after only a few uses
