Description of Fowler 72 646 300 Cylinder Dial Gauge

Accurate Measurements: This bore gage features a dial indicator with a graduations of 0.0005" and a measuring depth of 9.5". Extended Range: This 2-6" bore gage, with a two-point contact system, is used for measuring hole diameters and also to detect geometry abnormalities such as ovality and taper; carbide-tipped anvil contact points provide extended wear and improved abrasion resistance. Self Centering: The easily adjustable bore gauge is self-centering for fast, accurate measurements. Set Includes: A bore gage with insulated grip, self-centering measuring head, an extension holder, spacers, and a fitted case. Requires standards for setting nominal sizes (not supplied). Note:- The smallest anvil is already installed and the largest is left empty (used for metric sets); The small slots at the top of the box are for the washers/spacers (washers are inside bag). Graduation: .0005 inch. Carbide anvils. Insulated grip. Spring loaded centralizing foot. Complete in shop-hardened case.

Appropriate quality at a fair price.

This is a decent tool. (This isn't Starrett quality, but if you're buying this gauge, don't expect this level of performance. After all, a Starrett bore gauge is more than twice the price of this one.) I needed to gauge the bores. in a Ford 7.3 IDI diesel that I am converting and it worked great for that. It's not as smooth as a more expensive bore gauge, and if I was overhauling engines regularly I'd buy a better (and more expensive) gauge. But for my needs (I'm just a lay mechanic, need it at

All you need is in the caliper and nothing more. .

I've been using Fowler instruments for decades and the philosophy behind their design has been surprisingly consistent. They are rather sparsely designed, no-frills tools where the emphasis is on performance and nothing else. With careful handling and proper storage, they will provide consistent and accurate results suitable for most but not the most precise machining tasks and will last a lifetime. This caliper is typical of Fowler in that regard. Some internal parts are alloy steel rather…

Pros
  • Nominal size standards required (not included)
Cons
  • High price

Good Specialty Tool, Good Value

As there is very little information on the net about this tool I decided to provide a few details Motor Conclusion: Would I buy it again? --- Yes, would I recommend it to a friend? ---Yes.Pros: ---Outstanding value ---Extensive measurement capabilities ---Great for evaluating out-of-round and tapered cylinders ---Good solid body and overall solid feel.Cons: ---Measurement step with no tool conversion is 0, 2 inches ---Measurement against external reference only ---Does not fit or manufacture…

Pros
  • Extended Range: This 2-6 inch two point contact system bore gauge is used to measure bore diameter as well as to detect geometry anomalies such as ovality and taper; Carbide tipped anvil contact points provide longer wear and increased abrasion resistance
