As mentioned, sometimes this device does not work right out of the box. If you turn it over, remove the lid and press on it to activate it, you'll see a piece of metal that needs to be in contact for the element to heat up. Until you bend this piece to the touch, nothing will happen. Once you do that you should be fine. It seems to work quite well, although I haven't put too much effort into it and haven't used it very much.

If it doesn't work right away, flip it over and unscrew the bottom. The heating element is a wire with loops on both ends. If you press the lever and look at the hinge area, you'll see a piece of metal with a knob on the end. You may need to bend part of the button to "penetrate" the heating element. The same on the front panel. Wave your hand up and down to see where it should make contact. After that, it's sealed like a dream.
