Much better than cheap tools.

This is a quality tool. I've tried a few cheaper ring compressors but only managed to cripple the rings and scratch the engine block. This tool doesn't work miracles, but at least it works. Spend a little upfront on such a tool and save yourself heartache and injured fingers.

Provides good compression control

Well made, durable for compressing very hard rings. Offers good control to get the compression you need but lets the piston slide. One oddity is that the coating is like paint that will scratch the rings. All I did admit was that a few flakes of paint wouldn't hurt pistons, rings and cylinders.

  • I hold my fists
Cons
  • I have no particular complaints about it, everything is fine

It's garbage. Useless. Don't buy this.

Absolutely useless garbage. There are deep wear marks in the compressor rings that can damage your new rings. All compression rings in this kit are like this. Your new rings will attach to these marks and will damage the finish when you insert the piston into the cylinder. When I tried to contact Gear Wrench my phone worked. Don't waste your time and money with this junk tool.

Great tool from an even better company

The set works as it should. I bought this tool to replace pistons and rings on a Toyota 2AZ engine. The quality was on par with anything else in GearWrench. This was bought to replace a better known brand that was inferior in comparison to this set. This kit blew the OTC kit out of the water. Make sure the compressor ring lies evenly over the entire surface of the cylinder block to keep the rings pressed against the cylinder wall.

The best ring compressor.

I have been using cylinder ring compressors for some time. I rebuilt the engine with liners and the pistons were tight. I wasn't able to compress the rings enough to fit in the hub with the barrel compressor. I have found several other compressors that cost over $100. To save some money I took a chance and it works perfectly. I can lower the piston into the cylinder almost four times faster than with a cylindrical compressor because the ratchet handle only takes a compression or two to fully…

MUST BE USE!

This set is made from durable tool steel. It won't get out of shape anytime soon. Here are my comments: Comes with a good sheath although putting all the rings back is a hassle. The ratchet handle works efficiently and does not slip. For most US conversions, like the SBC 350, you only need a ring that fits 4 1/8 inches. So far this has grabbed the piston well too. However, insertion into a cylinder requires little dexterity; don't do it first. Squeeze the ring tightly. Leave it tight as you…
