It's mechanical. It takes time to register the temperature.

Roughly equivalent to a digital IR thermometer. Remember that a wood stove will not have the same temperature everywhere. It depends on where your fire is, where most of the charcoal is, what type of wood you are using, how the air is supplied, if your stove has afterburners and where they are etc. I used an IR thermometer to check to determine the hottest spot on the front of our wood stove. This front-mounted spring thermometer approximates the average temperature of the top. There is a range

I LOVE THIS THERMOMETER!

We are new to using the wood stove. Firewood is our most important heat source. This thermometer saves a marriage. We used to argue about closing the door/airflow etc. Now this thermometer tells a story and the argument ends (sort of). He still closes the door early when it starts, but at least I have concrete evidence to support my version. Seriously, I'm trying to learn how to recognize a good burn, a secondary burn, and all that technical stuff. I run outside to see if smoke is coming out…

Went from 2 stars to 4 stars after the laser test.

UPDATE: After purchasing a laser temperature sensor I found this thermometer to be pretty accurate. It's within 50 degrees of the laser so I'd say it's pretty accurate. I have changed my rating to 4 stars based on new testing. NOT EXACTLY! I wanted to upgrade from the Rutland I bought to one that is more readable from a distance. I chose Inferno based on the reviews but they weren't what I expected at all. After first use, the Inferno was 150-200 degrees hotter than the Rutland. I figured my…

Useful tool to help you burn fuel efficiently and safely

Purchased to replace a Rutland brand thermometer for a medium sized fireplace insert. I have 7 years of experience with this fireplace insert, so I've learned how to fire it better. The inferno appears to follow the rise and fall of temperature more gently than the rutland. Rutland temporarily held the temperature and then suddenly jumped 50-100 degrees in an instant. Thus, Inferno makes it easier to predict the evolution of the fire cycle. In my particular fireplace insert (Jotul Kennebec)…

Customer service should have been honest

I originally bought a stovepipe thermometer but after reading that it would require drilling a hole in my double walled stovepipe I thought I might need another instrument. I called support, they told me I can't use stove pipe on stove top as they are calibrated completely different. Okay, who am I to argue? I ordered the Stove Top version and when I received it it looked identical to the Stove Pipe version except it was a different color with different color coding areas but the temp number…
