This was a Christmas present for my woodworking nephew and he really appreciated it. The chisels are very strong, with a full shank to withstand impact hammering. The storage case is a nice touch as my nephew loves the extra impact protection in his tool box.
A very nice set of chisels from Marples. The only criticism is that the metal has a rough edge at the end to hit it one after the other and hangs over the cast iron handle. It's annoying when you only use your hands. The chisels are not as sharp as supplied. Get a set of stones that are at least 3000 grit. After that, it's easy to get razor sharp.
Okay I'm picky as hell I have an old distressed set of chisels from 50 years of use Stanley and you were the prefect. But sometimes, in the heat of completing a project, they lead a hard life. These are better and they come in a beautifully crafted canvas case and they are sharp, very sharp. I look forward to using them and taking care of the right good tool.
Open the chisel to find the smallest chisel with a rounded corner, then look at the largest chisel, it has dents with a rolled edge as if it would be used against a tree with a nail in it. It should be new but I don't see how there could be a bigger chisel. Either way, you can buy 4 packs of Stanly or Irwin at the hardware store for $4-5. Save here and go shopping!
Purchased to install hardware on a newly built gate. I'm not a carpenter or even a woodworker. But clear lines and precise depth were achieved with all the mental rehearsals and tools that could be given. I don't even have that nice mallet you see in some ads. Have a rubber mallet. These bits allowed me to cut at the angles I wanted and I got clean results. I would recommend practicing with the same type of scrap wood to learn how the chisels work. Once you know her inclinations, it will be…
Case sharp (good case, well built little blade caps), VERY solid steel one piece with nice grippy handle, big even in my big hands (not too much big, just strong and curvy/ergonomic). I haven't even sharpened them yet, but so far every woodcarving turns out great! If I were a serious pro I would give a more detailed review but as these are the first set of really high quality chisels I have ever owned I am very happy with them! Good combo of 3 sizes although I will invest in a larger set…
Pros
Sturdy construction ideal for high impact building materials
Just received and will update this review after careful use. What I like: Great case. Protects edges and keeps chisels in order. The steel of the chisel goes through the handle and creates a strong hitting surface at the end. Rubberized handles won't slip in your hand. Value. Irwin makes great tools that last and this set is very reasonably priced. What I don't like: nothing yet. What I do not know; they don't come as suddenly as they could. They picked up the thin edge pretty quickly, but I…
Pros
Ergonomic handles with ProTouch grips are strong enough to withstand rough handling in the workplace
They are longer than I expected but it was a pleasant surprise. They worked the rot from the box well enough to gouge out the wood under the doorknob to make it a better fit. I got the wet sandpaper/glass disc sanding system from Peachtree Woodworking and spent an hour tonight polishing the back and finer edge of the entire kit. They took advantage well. Very good tool for the price and I appreciate the case and the protective plastic edges. Construction chisel, not woodworking quality. but…
