The top opening is very large to accommodate fat legs and heavy clothing, but the top drawstring was difficult to pull up due to the compressive strength of the material. This is a very well made product. I don't have much experience with spats, but I expect them to work that way. First the materials. The nylon used is of very good quality, it seems quite durable. The elastic at the bottom and in the middle of the lower leg is very durable. When you put them on they fit snugly around the boot and snugly around the shin so that the center is snug against the leg but not so that you can feel it through the pant leg.
