High quality product

I was looking for a high quality heating tape to protect my lines from freezing in winter. This MD tape was a perfect fit. You can buy cheaper bands, but this is a heavy-duty band that will last you for years. I put the tape on last fall, it saved my pipe from freezing this winter, and six months later it looks in perfect condition.

My pipe is frozen.

My pipe is frozen through, according to the forecast it will be colder. I wrapped this around my pipe after work, and the next day at noon (next time I checked) the water was flowing freely. It's nice that it has a thermostat and a light to show it's running so I can see from the side of the house without having to go downstairs (at least at night).

Pros
  • New
Cons
  • Almost everything OK

Protects pipes from freezing.

This is just what I needed to keep my well water from freezing in winter. It's easy to install, just wrap around the pipes and connect. I wrapped mine in fiberglass insulation to keep it warm. Because the thermostat measures the air temperature and only turns on when needed, it saves on electricity bills. due to the fact that the heating pad burns 24 hours a day. The cable is of high quality and should last for several years.

Pros
  • Permanent test results
Cons
  • Long delivery time

the block seems to be defective,

Bought and installed according to the instructions. The thermostat doesn't seem to work because when I tested at 45 degrees the unit kicked on and immediately heated the pipe until it was too hot to touch. The heater shouldn't have turned on at all by the time the temp hit 38. I contact the manufacturer to check the operating temperature, as it seems to me that this element should not be heated above 100-120 degrees. I'm glad I tested it because it definitely looks like a fire hazard.

Pros
  • is GOLS certified
Cons
  • Something else

Didn't receive this wrapped cable pictured in the ad.

This tubular heating cable was actually 12ft long which was fine with me but no problem as you can see on this picture of the cable it was rolled up which I thought I would to get. Instead I have a cable running horizontally along the pipe, which I didn't want. MD explained that they were not wrapped in cords. I wasn't too happy because I didn't get what I thought I was buying. I decided to keep it because sending it back would be too expensive.

Pros
  • practical item
Cons
  • Good but not great

Star "SNOW POCALYPSE "!

Here in the snowy peaks of LOL north of Atlanta my cabin is on pillars exposing the pipes to freezing winds. Thanks to this cable, I only have to worry about falling trees! My pipes were frozen in the previous storm - "Snow Jam" - up here that means: no heat, no water, no light! On the recommendation of a plumber, I purchased an MD Building Products heating cable with a thermostat. Delivered in no time, installed in just five minutes! You have something to think about - tick the frozen pipes…

Pros
  • Very good price
Cons
  • Hard to say

The package is not very useful to tell you about it

Be careful to choose the right length. I even asked the manufacturer for advice. If you plan to wrap it around a 10ft 3-4" pipe, you need at least the 18ft model, not this one. This is required when the temperature drops below say 15 degrees for long periods of more than a few days, heating starts at 38 degrees F which is a waste of electricity. I deducted 2 stars for the dimensions and the lack of flexibility in setting the temperature.

Pros
  • Elegant design
Cons
  • Some problems

It only took a year!

Installed in November 2012. Has not been switched on since mid-December 2013 when the temperature was below 38 degrees [according to the description]. It's now 25 degrees and the last few nights it's been a lot less. The thermostat has failed. It still turns on when you press the test lamp, so the power supply to the cable and the cable itself are working. Update 2014-11-28 They are only valid for one year. The second cable I bought to replace the original now behaves the same way. Doesn't turn

Pros
  • Cool product
Cons

The picture is misleading and the instructions should be on the website.

Product looks good but pictures are misleading. For example, the instructions state that you should never wrap the heating element around the pipe, and the picture alongside shows the wrapped pipe. The instructions also state that the heating element must be shorter than the tube. This is what we need to know before purchasing this product, especially since the picture shows a wrapped tube and wrapping the tube means you need a longer heating element than a tube. Finally, if, like me, you see…

Cons
  • Ugly packaging
