Maxim announces the MAX98357 digital input Class D audio power amplifiers, enabling designers to implement compact, efficient plug-and-play solutions at a cost-effective price. In addition to its small form factor, the device is capable of achieving a 3.2W Class AB amplifier with Class D amplifier efficiency, resulting in excellent high fidelity sound for a variety of product applications. The MAX98357 Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) plug-and-play speaker amplifiers take advantage of the flexibility of Maxim's pinout. 35 different clocks and 128 digital audio formats can be automatically configured with a single power supply. For superior sound quality, the device uses a high noise immunity digital input with high jitter tolerance. It also provides excellent electromagnetic interference suppression, allowing long-line connected speakers without the need for external filtering. Suitable for microcontrollers or development board systems with I2S audio output such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino and ESP32.

Unlike other

This DAC was a cheap and brilliant way to improve the sound quality of my esp32 project. He turned the terrible sound quality with terrible background noise into an incredibly clear and pleasant sound. Personally, I've found that reducing the gain to 3dB works best for my project.

Adding I2S support to a microprocessor

Teensy 4.0 just came out and I was looking for a way to play some simple sounds. Previous versions of Teensy had a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) in the system that I could hook up to the amps and speakers. Play pre-recorded sounds. Unfortunately, Teensy 4.0 does not have a DAC, but supports I2S. I was able to quickly add I2S support by connecting a MakerHawk MAX98357 to Teensy's I2S pins and to an Adafruit breadboard speaker. Well played.
