Save yourself the hassle and buy a brand new cartridge.

Spend an extra $35 and save an hour of your life and a lot of trouble. Restoring these cartridges is not worth it. I have never managed to fit the old rod into the new cylinder without cutting the o-rings. Either the O-rings were too big or they changed something and the rebuild kits are not compatible with the old stems. I gave up after the third and bought an assembled cartridge.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Long delivery time

Good but can be tricky

This kit contains the parts necessary to rebuild a Moen 1222 cartridge, but reassembly can be tricky. I ended up using silicone paste to reassemble the cartridge, concerned that the internal o-rings would break when the parts were put together. Care should be taken when inserting the inner cartridge into the outer plastic case. Even with the lube that comes with it, this can be difficult. And if you nick or tear one of the O-rings, you're back with a useless cartridge. in this kit

Best of all, Faucet Parts

can be difficult. I finally got my old cartridge fixed today after ordering this kit a few weeks ago. Removing the large o-rings was easy with some wax removal tools and toothpicks (I think I could do with picks). The rings are not tight at first, probably due to stretching during installation. The smallest O-ring was difficult to replace. It can be slippery, so a piece of thin cloth will help. When inserting the inner part into the outer plastic shell, the o-rings will stick out of the holes…

Worked on my Moen 96909 cartridge marked

Moen apparently only guarantees the faucet distributor for life as they were more than happy to offer me a $60 replacement cartridge instead of a free cartridge for my 18 year old. beat. The plastic tube that came with it differs from my original cartridge in that it doesn't have an O-ring on the bottom. My side seals had holes in them, but the ones in the kit are solid. This is the kit that Moen says I will need, but they recommend I buy their cartridge instead. It all came back together on…

It's either your time or more your money

The shower head started dripping many months after the unit was installed as part of a renovation project, but the new shower has never been used. The cartridge has deteriorated without being used. How is that possible? Who knows ? It's plumbing! Replacing O-rings is easy; The tricky part is getting the assembled stem into the new plastic case. New o-rings tend to get pinched between the stem body and the inside of the plastic body at the holes. This blocks the movement of the stem body. Using…

Great idea, poor execution

This kit is used to replace all the inexpensive 'soft' parts of the Moen shower cartridge, saving a lot of money by reusing the more expensive 'hard' parts. that don't wear out. It seemed like a great idea to fix a leaking cartridge. Unfortunately, after replacing the O-rings when reassembling the cartridge, two of them broke. I had to reuse two old o-rings that turned out to be fine. The repairs worked, but they needed to include a few extra O-rings or make the process a little more reliable…

Inexpensive solution for an expensive valve

All required valve parts were included but the disposable plastic key used to remove the cartridge from the housing was for a different cartridge. I had the correct wrench which I've kept since this valve was last rebuilt (I get about a year of drip-free use on each repair) so it didn't really matter. Even if you didn't keep the old key, the temperature controller's setscrew can be screwed into the end of the cartridge shaft. Then the screw can be carefully clamped with pliers and the cartridge

assembly required. Additional assembly required. Spare discs would be nice.

So I finally needed this set. Not to mention that I had such a hard time disassembling the existing cartridge that I had to cut open the plastic case and break two old washers. When assembling this unit, I found that the washers are slightly larger than the outlet they were supposed to fit into. As a result, when trying to assemble the block, the washers piled up and jumped out of the slots in the plastic case. To put the knot back together I had to put the washers back in and pray they didn't…
