This drive enclosure worked (eSATA and USB 3.0) but got very hot very quickly. It needs either a fan or fins so it can cool the SATA drive it contains, but doesn't have either. I quickly decided that I couldn't risk leaving an important 6TB drive in this case - it's too hot, resulting in a high risk of data loss. I've had many other OWC (Other World Computing/MacSales.com) devices and liked them, but they weren't up to date. Maybe that's enough for a small drive (500GB or 1TB), but the bigger…

Great backup solution for older MacBook Pros with FireWire 800

Great product - clear setup instructions, fairly easy to get started. I used it for a 4TB drive on older MacBook Pros with FireWire 800. Significantly faster Time Machine backups compared to the previous FW 400 Lacie drive. Despite the low price, it comes with a full set of cables and has a 3.0A power supply for large drives. The aluminum housing is excellent for heat dissipation from high-performance 7200 RPM drives that can get very hot. It's also pretty much the only case in town that…

fantastic body Solid, slim and powerful.

When I came across this case I was looking for a Mac case (FireWire 800) that could support large 3-4TB hard drives. There aren't many devices from established brands like OWC, but FireWire 800 has always been hard to find except in Mac-oriented products. However, I'm glad I found it; It was easy to set up, looks great next to my MacBook Pro, and all 4TB was ready to go right out of the box. Some people may need to reformat their hard drives depending on the previous condition/usage of the…

oh my god this is good

I have tried many external drives since my first one in 1998. Now remember I never bought you the most expensive but not the cheapest ester. Now for that baby, she's good! Very strong physique, she has power behind her back. Quickly! Some here say it's noisy, but not that loud. My Mac mini is louder than the drive, if that tells you anything. Oh, the blue power indicator light is bright, so I spent a little time on it, otherwise it looks like a neon blue night. I immediately ordered a second…

The new hard drive does not work even after reformatting.

I just bought this drive to replace an old drive (bought in 2013) - redundant backup for my audio, video and photo files - that eventually failed. I looked at a few different drives but decided to stick with OWC because I've had good luck with their FireWire portable drives. I thought I made the right choice. How wrong I was - the hard drive failed twice during data transfer. Every time I tried to mount it again with Disk Utility, the disk wouldn't mount and gave an error that it needed to be…

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Slightly dented

Be careful which drive you buy for this case

Be careful when buying a hard drive for this case. I bought a 4TB HGST drive with a SATA III (6Gb/s) interface. After installing this drive I could not see the enclosure via USB3 on Windows 10 or via Firewire800 on OSX. The drive started but did not connect. I replaced the drive with a 2.5TB WD drive that has an older SATA 1 (3Gb/s) interface. The WD drive worked fine. Therefore, make sure not to use a SATA III (6 Gb/s) drive in this case. it can not work. After trying an HGST SATA III drive in
