Good backup plan, best in the accessories and parts section

I live in the Pacific Northwest and there have been times when my 4x4 could barely handle the road. This year I bought several snow chains for a truck. I have not used them (YET) but I have dry mounted them on the wheels and they fit my LT275/65 R18 tires perfectly. They were installed fairly quickly for a test run and I'll keep them on the truck in case I need them this winter. The company makes good snow chains, so I'm optimistic.

Z chain, Z chain. - Accessories and parts

I have used them once since I received them. They seem to be working fine. Pretty easy to put on. Just remember to tighten the outer cable while riding. You don't want them to be too loose. You also need to be careful to tuck the cable ends into plastic holders to keep the excess cable from dangling while you ride. I don't use chains very often. Before this car, I've always used "old school" chains, so it was a new experience. And still I would recommend her.

Pros
  • Satisfied so far
Cons
  • Protection

Difficult to fit compared to other chains but very manageable once it's right! They work great on snow and ice and run smoother than most chains on tarmac. Tightening looks easy in the video, but you'll have to stop a few times after you start moving and keep tightening them so they're snug enough to move quickly without loosening. However, after all the hassle, they are truly amazing to use. I would recommend these if you have a long run that requires chains or if you need to go fast, but ifโ€ฆ

Broke first time, waste of money.

Bought a year ago after a heavy snow storm. Got them after I really needed them but checked for fit. This year, after another heavy snowfall, I applied them. They were properly installed. I drove about 200 meters at slow speed and checked again. One was fine, but the other had pulled a couple of wires out of brass fittings. It turned out that the metal collapsed under stress. I was lucky to stop earlier as the cables could damage the brake line. $100 wasted. They are technically under warranty,

For light use only!

Installation was easy. Used only once. A total of 15 miles of peaks. The right rear cable moved a bit for the first few miles. Probably due to tire slip on ice. Couldn't adjust because the cable was too tight. I got stuck on a slight slope on the ice which broke the right rear cable. I had to cut the wires to remove them completely to avoid damaging the car. While it was still stuck trying to get it out, the left rear cable also came loose and had to be cut to remove. The cables were installedโ€ฆ

Big Difference: Auto

I bought these cables as a cheap alternative to winter tires for my Toyota Tundra. The cables arrived just before a heavy snowfall that should have brought 4 inches. We ended up with about 2 inches so I couldn't use them. Then came the worst snowstorm ever recorded in March. We registered 6.9 inches. I put the chains on and went to try them out. I have a Tundra 2wd with 265/70/18 tires. My Tundra is a great truck, but downright terrible when it comes to driving through untouched snow. The snowโ€ฆ
