I figured the rectangular shape would provide a wider surface area that would hold more incense sticks. Tears of Greek incense should be placed over or between burning coals and burn evenly. A mixture of different incense sticks is often used, so an "even" burn is a must to create that pleasant blend of fragrant smoke. I didn't come up with "evenly lit"
