Ideal for portraits and macro photography; worth the money

beautiful photos. I almost feel like a pro. =) I like to describe myself as an amateur at an intermediate level. I decided to save up and use this lens for macro photography AND as a portrait lens. It works well for both BUT you have to consider a few things I've learned from using this lens: - It's not that fun to use with kids running around. Not the best lens for everyday use in the park as you will encounter a lot of AF hunting. Most photographers may already be aware of this, but this is the first expensive lens I've ever bought. You can help by setting the lens to focus from 0.45 to infinity rather than full range, but that won't help much. Macro lenses generally do NOT shoot at the advertised aperture at any distance. So you won't be shooting at f/2.8 with this lens at macro distances. Provide adequate lighting. This lens works damn well indoors when shooting at f/2.8. (I'm talking about poorly lit gymnasiums where schools like to hold concerts and ceremonies.) This lens's depth of field at f/2.8 is VERY SHARP. You can lose focus and get unwanted results if you don't do something as simple as focusing on a real eyeball (instead of aiming for the face and hoping). On zoom it's pretty noticeable when you lose focus. I can add more details later as I come across them, but overall this is a great lens to have in your pocket. I'll let a few photos speak for themselves. =
