I had a Furuno GP31 that worked great for over 20 years. Unfortunately, it stopped providing accurate data in April 2019 due to a GPS rollover (weekly data from satellites is transmitted in a 10-bit word that only handles 20-year weeks). I bought a GP39 which works fine once installed. However, the appendix does not meet the requirements. It works well when bolted to a table, but you can't mount a GPS display on a vertical bulkhead. Otherwise, the display will tilt down 45 degrees and become unreadable. I removed some plastic with a dremel which helps, but it still won't tilt parallel to the bulkhead. It's about 20 degrees below zero. Installation is also inexpensive. And when the Dremel mount is tilted down 20 degrees, the cables twist. It also uses a lot more power than the GP31. The spec says 0.7 amps. I measure about half of that, which is still twice the current draw of the GP31. No manual included, just 4 pages of incomprehensible information. I finally found a guide on the internet. It's pretty good, but lacks important information, like the I/O setup page. Finally, it doesn't send NMEA suggestions about which satellites it's watching, so my AIS can't display that information. It was the same with the GP31. And good luck trying to program this thing that it sends correct NMEA data! This is an undocumented process of trial and error. I finally found a guide on the internet. It is very good but important information is missing, e.g. B. the I/O setup page. Finally, it doesn't send NMEA suggestions about which satellites it's watching, so my AIS can't display that information. It was the same with the GP31. And good luck trying to program this thing to send proper NMEA data! This is an undocumented process of trial and error. I finally found a guide on the internet.
