Birds shouldn't have smooth perches 24/7. If this is the case, over time they will begin to shed scales on their legs, leading to ulcers on them. This is similar to how a person loses a nail when they lose the scales on their leg. Birds cannot wear shoes, so they need scales on the skin of their paws to prevent wear and tear when walking and sitting. Birds' feet and toes are made mostly of tough tendons and bones.
