I use them when the wood has "ripped out" and the screw won't hold (this often happens with trailer door jambs). The quarter inch version works better for this, but they also work well as long as the hole isn't too big. They're difficult to screw in (and if you use them, when you reinstall a screw you MUST drill a pilot hole, even in wood - I've used a few of these as a preventive measure on wood where nothing has been screwed before, and I needed something because they hold so tight compared to screws) and they hold very tightly, don't end up ripping out the screw hole by the force against it and causing the door strike plate to fall out of the door joint like screws. do install in the door. If the hinge screw became loose due to strength and age I would use it to reinstall the door hinge into the wall. I haven't used them on concrete or brick, but I expect they'll get the job done there.
