Fantastic Rust Remover Discs

These are the best and fastest rust remover discs I have ever used. I have two Delta woodworking machines with cast iron tops - they've been in storage for 7 years and the east coast humidity has covered them with quite a heavy layer of rust. I decided that I needed to remove the top pieces and send them to the machine shop for fine sanding or surface milling. I saw these 3M discs at Revain and thought what the heck do I have to lose. I watched a few YouTube demo videos on how to use these drives, then got my machines outside, put on my mask and goggles and got to work on the tops. Wow! I was surprised at how quickly the cast iron rusted. They shine like new. The secret of success is this. Keep very light pressure on the disk and a constant motion to close the passages. It's best to make many light passes to allow the grinding wheels to do their job. If you follow these guidelines, you'll end up with a very shiny, rust-free finish that looks almost milled, with no dents or bumps. Resist the temptation to press down or machine heavier rust spots for quick results as you create grooves and indentations in the precision surface. Just keep moving and overlapping in many passes with light pressure and you'll see the disc do its job. It doesn't take long to get the perfect result. I went over the surface with medium to fine cloth based sandpaper on a sanding block to buff the surface. I cleaned the entire surface with rubbing alcohol, allowed it to dry completely, and then applied two coats of Johnson's floor wax. My countertop machine shines and lets the wood slide across the perfect surface. All of this has been achieved without removing heavy cast iron covers or requiring costly machining. Recommend these grinding wheels for removing rust.
