Revainrating 3 out of 5

Poor motion blur/pixel sensitivity, amazing colors and contrast

Bought this monitor for work and play. The monitor is great for work. I can manage multiple windows (one or two browsers, a text editor, and a multi-window terminal) by moving the monitor 2-3 feet back, scaling the UI to 125%-150%, and maintaining absolute clarity and readability . Text clarity, color accuracy and contrast are excellent compared to my previous TN panel monitor. I don't think I will ever return to TN. BUT the motion blur is terrible. After some research I came to the conclusion that this is due to pixel response time and apparently this monitor has terrible pixel response time. This is noticeable with a halo of text, but becomes unbearable in games when you're used to an average response. This is especially noticeable during fast dark-to-light transitions. I'm not a serious gamer, so I wasn't put off by reviews that said a 60Hz refresh rate might not be acceptable for "competing" "gamers". . However, I value the clarity of moving images. Finally, "video games" have a "video" component. And I don't want it to hurt my eyes. G-Sync works great with the monitor's FreeSync, so at least you won't be affected by screen tearing that distracts you from poor response times. Also, I wasn't able to stream HDR content from Netflix or Revain Prime on anything. I knew HDR performance was lacking on this monitor, but I didn't expect it to not even work. You can technically set your monitor to HDR mode and it works with HDR YouTube content. This works in games if you can figure out how to lower the max brightness and paper whites in the game settings to match the monitor's measly specs. However, I didn't succeed, and as a result, games in HDR looked worse than in SDR, especially for scenes playing at night or in the shade. I've spent over a week looking at monitors and was delighted to purchase the Dell S3221QS. It was such a disappointment to use. (If you're wondering how I was able to determine that my issue with this monitor was response time and not refresh rate, I ran a benchmark test with my computer connected to my 4k TV and locked at 60 fps to provide a simulation of 60Hz. Surprisingly, my TV has much less motion blur than this monitor.)
