Solidly built but not 50 watts

Like most things I buy these days, I am skeptical about the performance claims that are made about products. These lights are no exception. Before I get up on a ladder to install things, they get bench tested for operation and performance. I bought 4 of these lights, they come 2 in a box. They arrived undamaged and are actually packed very well. I wired them to a cord and left them on overnight one at a time. I set them up vertically so the heat sink on the back gets the benefit of the airflow across the ribs. This is the most likely orientation they would be used in, like under the eaves of a house. The heat sink gets hot, but not too hot to touch, I measured 125 degrees F after being on all night (>10 hours) in a 68 degree F room. All 4 of the spots passed this initial test without issue. The wattage claim is bogus though. These 4 lamps drew anywhere from 278mA to 289mA. At 117V this is 31.3 watts. This was confirmed by a watt meter as well. Most the LED lights on the market use an equation to estimate the lumen output of LED lamps, it is not measured. These lamps are probably not close to 5500 lumen as claimed. Testing lumen output is precarious when the manufacturer does not state the testing process so buyer beware. In summary, these are economical outdoor LED floodlamps that are "very bright".

Pros
  • Lightning is perfect!
Cons
  • The installation process for these lights can be quite involved, requiring specialized tools and knowledge of electrical wiring, which may not be suitable for all DIY enthusiasts
