Mostly something (wide angle or zoom end) suffers, but this lens beats. Excellent image quality throughout. I picked it up after seeing it reviewed in Popular Photography. Also, while doing my homework online, I saw that many had more positive reviews than the Canon 28-135 USM. I actually have a 28-135 and am pretty sure I will be selling it now that I have this gem in my hands. The extra 10mm on the wide end really helps. Do your homework for yourself and you'll find that this can be a great addition to your collection if you're looking for lenses in this class. wasn't as "creamy" as we'd like. Some lines (trees in the background) were sharp, like looking at a 3D image without glasses. It distracted my eyes enough to focus on the background images. I have yet to experiment with this lens, but I might lose a star for that. UPDATE /55/18: I just parted with my Canon 18-135. I mostly shoot with a prime lens, but it's nice to have a quality zoom. I know it's a few years old but I can't let it go. With modern processing settings via applications or computer software they make this lens even sharper. I don't see that I'll ever get rid of it. Great lens. I'm happy with the 5 star rating I gave it a few years ago. I haven't tested the updated Sigma 18-200 to compare it to this lens. I'm not sure how they could improve this lens.
