I've used them for hanging whiteboards, paintings and even fire extinguishers on various jobs for many years and they still work perfectly. They do what they have to do and they do it well. If you need more than just a drywall screw and can't find a bolt, use this. One person commented that he ruined his wall, well that's common sense. Always pre-drill and KNOW what you're drilling into (don't use them if you have plaster walls). I drill a 1/8" pilot hole in the drywall between the studs, carefully slide a Phillips screwdriver through about 1/4" of the hole, then insert the tip of the anchor into the hole and screw it all the way in. Don't overtighten. The next step, of course, is to insert the screw. I personally wouldn't attempt to use them directly on the shelf as the drywall can crack if it doesn't set immediately. This isn't rocket science. Unless you do it like this.
