I've been using this NAS for about 3 weeks now with two 10TB drives in a RAID 1 configuration I am generally satisfied with the purchase. Build/Materials: The case does the job, but the plastic cover slides over the rims and is held in place with rubber grommets, feels a bit cheap. The plastic clips on the drive bays also seem like a cheap option. However, it works and even these issues have not caused any problems so far. Since I don't plan on changing drives often, these are minor issues. Technical characteristics. The biggest complaint I've received is the 2GB of RAM installed on this model. If the intended purpose is to use this purely for storing and transferring files, that's probably good enough. But I wanted to do a bit more (nothing special) and quickly found that the system was using swap space on the disks, causing serious performance issues. To top it off, official Synology brand memory was insanely overpriced when I was considering an upgrade. However, I did find a 4GB Samsung module (4GB DDR4 PC4-21300, 2666MHz, 260PIN SODIMM, 1.2V, CL 19) that I bought for 1/5 the price at the time and it has worked flawlessly so far until now. This cheap upgrade made the little box much more capable and turned me from a remorseful novice buyer to an avid user. Installing RAM was straightforward, but selecting a compatible module was tedious as there have been reports of Synology NAS devices issuing warnings when third-party modules are used. Usage: The general usage of the system was relatively easy. I have a strong computer background and haven't had any major problems. I assume most tech savvy people can handle it without too much trouble. However, sometimes oddities happen that lead to frustration. For example, enabling virus scanning was easy enough, but trying to update virus definitions manually doesn't work - the UI doesn't return an error, but the update message doesn't change and nothing happens. However, scheduling a scheduled update before a scan works fine. This seems to be because the scheduled operation is running under an account with privileges other than Administrator. While this isn't necessarily a big deal, it does cause some confusion/frustration. Overall I am satisfied and would buy it again if needed. I would just assume that RAM can be a major bottleneck in some use cases and is up for an upgrade.
