I bought this scanner for my father because he had old slides that he wanted to put on his computer. Once we got the hang of it, this thing was surprisingly easy to use. The software automatically adjusts the brightness of each photo, and there's also a manual adjustment if the image isn't correct. Overall it did its job really well. You won't find a better scanner for the price. We haven't tried film scanning yet. But there is a separate compartment for this.
